Commodore’s highly anticipated return is off to a great start, with the new Commodore 64 Ultimate selling over 10,000 units since its July 12 launch. The company shared a sales chart on X that showed a strong initial surge from early buyers followed by a steady increase in sales. This growth was notably boosted by the release of Commodore's YouTube video series, which provided behind-the-scenes content and directly correlated with a rise in demand. The C64 Ultimate itself combines a nostalgic feel with modern technology, featuring an FPGA core and a unique transparent keyboard circuit board.
Priced at an affordable $299, the C64 Ultimate is designed as a collector's item and a functional retro system. The current Founders Edition is a one-time release, which adds to its appeal for fans who want to secure a piece of this historic comeback. This successful launch follows a report that the C64 Ultimate brought in over $2 million in its first week alone, showing that there is a genuine market for updated classic systems.
Looking beyond this single product, Commodore has hinted at a much larger plan. The company is establishing a “Founder’s Sandbox” for future projects and has a roadmap that includes 12 planned releases over the next four years. This milestone suggests there's a real and growing appetite for updated retro technology and marks a promising beginning for the brand's long-term vision.
The second Commodore 64 revolution has begun!
I hope they redlaunch the Amiga 3000 and Video Toaster. That was a hell of a machine.
